3 Ways to Improve Brain Power

Your brain is the central computer of your entire body, and it controls your moods, your thoughts and energy levels. Our brains are very complex and incredibly challenging to control, which is why so many individuals fall into temptation, and despite their best judgment, procrastinate, eat poorly, or struggle to retain information. There are a variety of different ways that you can help improve the functionality of your brain, which will help boost your mood and your mental health. Here are a few things you can do to strengthen your brain:

Physical Activity

Your brain relies on physical activity to help keep it healthy and strong. Exercise will improve blood flow circulation and the oxygen capacity in your lungs, which your brain needs to stay robust. Going for daily walks/runs, partaking in resistance training (i.e. weightlifting), or meditative practices such as yoga, will improve your ability to retain memory and will prevent degeneration to your brain. The amount of exercise needed is relative to your condition, but doing 30-45 mins of exercise, 4-5 times a week is an excellent way of getting yourself on the right path.

Focus on Your Diet

The fuel that you provide your body with determines how efficiently your brain operates. It can be very easy and very tempting to be persuaded into the drive-thru window to pick up a greasy burger, and french fries but the nutritional value those foods provide are slim-to-none. A healthy diet that is high in complex carbs & protein will go a long way in strengthening your brain’s chemistry. Ensure that you don’t skip breakfast; a breakfast that consists of eggs, milk, oats, and fruit will provide your mind with the energy to function adequately throughout the day. Here a few different food suggestions that will boost the functionality of your brain:

  • Salmon, Tuna, Trout, etc. Fish that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids improve brain function and work to strengthen memory capabilities

  • Blueberries

  • Avocado

  • Dark chocolate

  • Drink approximately 2 liters of water per day

  • Bananas

  • Spinach

Prioritize Your Sleep

The older you get, the more you need to prioritize sleep. Quality sleep can be hard to come by when you’re raising a family, attending school or working a full-time job, but to think more clearly and improve your mood, getting approximately 7-8 hours of sleep per night is imperative. When you get an adequate amount of sleep per night, not only will your memory improve, but your immune system will improve, your metabolism will work more efficiently, and your blood pressure may lower.

There are so many ways to improve the functionality of your brain, including engaging in physical activity, focusing on your diet and prioritizing sleep, but there are other countless ways as well. Getting plenty of sunlight and actively socializing with friends, family and coworkers will also help boost the receptors in your brain.
