Do they more calories? Activate more muscles vs regular shoes?
-Are they the quick fix they claim to be?
Toning shoes conclusion:
University of Wisconsin Exercise Study using women compared regular shoes vs “toning” shoes with respect to: “exercise response”, ie between calories burned, heart rate elevation and also muscle activation using electromyography (EMG) (quad/hamstring/calf/abdominals) and ….there was NO DIFFERENCE!
Your feet might be sore when you initially buy toning shoes making you think that you are engaging more muscles, but this research is showing this isn’t the case. Furthermore, you most likely are not burning more calories. Even with respect to ankle, knee and hip stabilization, more studies need to be done on the stability benefits of these shoes. If you have them, perhaps avoid initially walking long distances to let your feet and ankles adjust to the “instability”.
