2) You always hear about guys constantly wanting to “get big”.  Are eating disorders really increasing among men? Or is this a myth?

*This is unfortunately true; eating disorders are becoming more common among men.

*One in particular is called “reverse anorexia” also commonly called “muscle dysmorphia” where men see themselves as small and never muscular enough!

What are the influences?

*Many are situational such as the media and even Facebook! The fitness and health industry is partially responsible as a result of having anabolic drug users on covers and in features.

*Ironically, it has been suggested that muscular anabolic drug users themselves are more prone to suffering from dysmorphia. In one study of 108 bodybuilders (55 drug users and 53 non-users) there were 9 reported cases of reverse anorexia, all were admitted by the anabolic drug using group.

Take home message?

*Embrace your natural physique! We all have different body types but thankfully good nutrition and science can keep us at a healthy weight for our entire life.

*Self perceptions of body image start at an early age, filter that images your children encounter.

*Thankfully magazines are changing! Even REPS! Who I am shooting for this week is using me more often to portray an obtainable, healthy, athletic physique!
