2) Listener question from Chris, is Stevia good for you?
Stevia: “Stevia rebaudiana” has been around for a shorter period of time than “Splenda” and as a result has less research behind it. Many people choose Stevia because it is marketed as natural, however, not all things natural are good for us. Some studies showed adverse side effects. It is approved in Canada and recently the European Union.
Splenda: aka “sucralose” has been in existence far longer with many studies supporting its efficacy. It is not calorie free despite the label. Normally 3+ calories per gram but far less than regular table sugar. Another benefit is sucralose is stable at high temperatures, which makes it a good choice for low sugar baking.
Personally, I would recommend avoiding sweeteners as much as possible, using the natural flavor of your foods instead. We spoke about tea last week and the natural sweet taste minus the artificial chemicals!
3) Myth Buster: The latest quick fix is “African Mango Seed Extract”. Can it really dramatically reduce body fat?
*Also known as Irvingia Gambonensis”, mango seed extract is a very recent supplement to hit the market. Claims of fat loss, improved blood glucose and cholesterol are some of the many promises made on labels.
*Unfortunately, from my searching the first ever human trial was only in 2009 in Cameroon. Others have followed but the research is far too new to ingest these products! Also remember that these are small companies with moderate regulations at best when it comes to production standards. Do you know for a fact that is 100% pure mango seed extract? Do you know the long term effects? Do you really need this to obtain your health goals?
*I do not support these magic pills. Fat loss is about making a lifestyle change and learning to make choices in life while incorporating regular exercise.
