Childhood Obesity AND Vitamins and/or Supplements?

We received very sad news last week. Robert Kennedy, one of the pioneers in Canadian fitness and owner of Oxygen Magazine, REPS Magazine, Musclemag and Clean Eating passed away last week. I give Robert and his editorial teams at Maximum Fitness and REPS full credit for helping launch my career over the last five years. I will always be grateful for the opportunity to work for Robert Kennedy Publishing.

1) Youth obesity: We have a Crisis in Canada!

*Canada’s youth are predicted to live 5 years LESS than ours based on predictions in a new article in the New England Journal
of Medicine. Staggering!

*Canada’s youth spend 6+ hours in front of TV screen and monitors daily, almost as much as their parents spend at work!

*The result? Still little sense of urgency in Canada….we wait for consequences.

*It is time to encourage your kids to get active and change your own lifestyle.

Why change your own lifestyle as the parent?

*Our kids are always watching, you define their sense of “normal”. If normal is beer + couch time after work daily, guess what
the chances are of your son’s “normal” becoming that in 20yrs?

*Remember, adults often control the budget, groceries and food that is put on the table. If you do not care about your own
health, what are the odds of buying and cooking healthy meals for your kids? Now is the time for change, one Canadian at a time.

2) Myth Buster is a Listener question from Ben: “Aric, I just started working out seriously, what should I be taking as far as vitamins, supplements and pills?”

Potential options only if deemed necessary:

*multi-vitamin (normally not necessary), omega-3 fish oil, whey protein post exercise

* With popular pills to powders and new “convince your friend to sell supplements” companies still living strong, it is easy to consume substances unnecessary for optimum health.

*My advice is simple; ask questions and a lot of them! “why are you selling this product?” “Are you on a commission?” “Do YOU understand the science? If so explain it to me in simple terms and why I personally need it to achieve my health goals.”

*If these questions are met with hums and haws followed by very fast talking, walk away and consult with your doctor. Always make educated decisions based on good science before putting any supplement in your body.

*Ben, I am very happy to hear you are back exercising! My advice is simple with respect to supplementation. A whole-foods healthy diet is all the majority of us need to life a healthy long life.
